Aria, Aria, Aria

To unwind, avoid deadlines or reward myself after a story has been filed, I like to log onto the Internet Scrabble Club and play head-to-head timed Scrabble games with strangers around the world. Why Scrabble has not shut this thing down as they did the Facebook thing I don't know, but I'm grateful.

Anyhow, look carefully at the above grid from a game about two weeks ago. Do you see it? Three. Three times the word "ARIA" is used on that board. And, get this, *I* had the red tiles in that round. Yeah. It wasn't me. My non-Vegas, non-CityCenter-obsessed opponent did that.

Weird, right? Well, after that in the past few weeks, I started noticing the word is coming up a LOT in games:

I swear I'm not doing it on purpose just for the sake of this blog post. In fact, I'm not usually even the one who's doing it. But this IS Aria Eve, so when better to blog this?

I do admit to having done this one, however, on purpose:

I'm Friesster on the ISC, btw. Challenge me if you dare.

Until I moved to Las Vegas four years ago, I was a weekly player at the Los Angeles Scrabble Club, where I had the privilege of competing against some of the best players in the country on a regular basis. The "aria" coincidence is fun. The word pops up frequently in tournament play, as it is one of the most common "vowel dumps."
