Vegas is for...fish? The real kind?

OK, so Miles doesn't think it's as weird as the billboards I snapped and showed you all at McCarran promoting Nevada agribusiness and restaurants that skimp on ice water, but the Nevada Department of Wildlife is now pushing fishing on tourists? Does anyone every come here and say, "Dang, I should've brought my pole?" Can't you think of a few better places to plan for a fishing expedition than this Land O' Manmade Catfish-Stocked Lake?

And either way, this billboard outside the MGM Mirage kiosk by baggage needs a little updating.

Sure, Danny Gans has moved on and that's an obvious oopsy. But, also, what's a sellout? I hear they used to have such things, back in the day.

I dunno, there's a lot that fly in specifically for the fishing. Don't you keep up with news?

Actually those man made ponds, including Lake Mead, and Lake Mohave have a little more to offer than catfish, and stripers are the big attraction. The first Bassmaster Classic was held on Lake Mead in 1971, and 4 since then. Might explain why there's the really big Bass Pro Shop attached to Silverton. There's even a number of charters around Vegas, check out the pics, some good size fish out there.

You really need to get out more, there's all kinds of secret Vegas stuff out there. :)

OK< I just tried to post and it didn't take... if my first one somehow shows up later, please forgive my duplication.

I have seen that fishing ad at McCarran often, and my take was always that it was more of a public service ad than a serious push to encourage visitors to partake in Nevada's fishing "industry," if that's event the correct term.

The message is encouraging adults to spend time with children -- being a good parent or mentor, a Big Brother or Big Sister even. And it's touting fishing as one means of spending quality time with a child. There's nothing wrong with that thought.

I'd much rather see a sign telling people to take a child fishing than one that would be more akin to Las Vegas's better known activities. "Take your son to the sports book," or "Take your daughter to The Playboy Club" just wouldn't cut it. So fishing it is.
